PARIS MEN'S SHOWS SPRING 2010

This wonderful denim tube top is from the latest Jean-Paul Gaultier Men's Spring 2010 show. As some of you may know Gaultier likes to play gender mixing games; high-heel pumps with a suit, a pleated skirt, a pointy bra all on a man. Some of these ideas are pure camp and therefore genius but some of them just don't work at all. This look is sad evidence of the fact that Monsieur Gaultier needs to take a break from designing clothing for men and just stick with what he knows best, women's clothes for women. Bon chance!

MICHAEL JACKSON, 1958-2009

Michael Jackson, the world renowned king of pop, died last week at the age of 50, cause of death still unknown. No one will forget the stylistic contributions that Michael made to the worlds of fashion and music, in the late '80's. His music videos were some of the most iconic of their time and earned him legions of devoted fans willing to don that red leather jacket or that one sparkly glove. Unfortunately his life took one too many tragic turns and along with it went his fabulous style. Evidenced by his decision to start wearing women's clothing, among other things. Who can forget the photos of him shopping in Bahrain in an abaya or walking around L.A. in a women's Givenchy jacket and shirt and a pair of Balmain pants. A sad and predictable end to an even sadder bizarre existence.

ANDY MURRAY in FRED PERRY

Andy Murray, in his trim new Wimbledon look designed by Fred Perry, adds a small glimmer of hope to the fashion challenged players on the men's tour. For years, with the exception of Roger Federer and until recently Rafael Nadal and one or two others, men's tennis clothing has been an embarrassment. Loose baggy shorts, oversized shirts and backwards baseball caps. It always seems as if the players are not only fighting to stay in the game but fighting with their clothes as well. Maybe there's a reason that Nadal and Federer are number 1 and 2 in the world respectively. By projecting a confident and strong image not only through their games but their clothes as well. Now Andy Murray, number three in the world, has also subtracted that extra level of difficulty.

MILAN MEN'S SHOWS SPRING 2010

For the past few seasons the milan menswear shows have put forth some outrageous looks. Remember those faux fur sleeveless sasquatch shirts from Prada? Well, those days of frivolity and extravagance are gone, or at least on hiatus. Men's fashion is taking on a more sartorial and classic look—leaders of this trend were Gucci, Giorgio Armani and Prada. Could the depressed world economy have something to do with this? The clothing parading down the runways this season is well designed and completely wearable (a classic tailored look from Bottega Veneta). It's obvious that designers need people, in this case men, to start shopping again and the 2010 spring collections are the best evidence of this optimistic approach. Fingers crossed!
